Antoine Laurain is the author of the bestselling novels The President’s Hat, French Rhapsody, and The Red Notebook. A longtime lover of art history and cinema, Laurain has worked as a filmmaker and antiques dealer. It is this world of old, beautiful objects and the collectors who love them that is at the heart of many of his novels, such as his debut Ailleurs si j'y suis, which won the Prix Drouot in 2007. The Institut français d'Ecosse is happy and privileged to welcome Laurain into our home on the Royal Mile. The author will give a reading of his works, including his 2008 Fume et tue, which will be published in English in June by Gallic under the title Smoking Kills. We hold monthly wine tasting events in association with l'Art du Vin that take you on a journey from Bordeaux to Sancerre and beyond. While “taps aff” may be the favorite response to summer in Scotland, the French will be more apt to say “tchin tchin” to apéros and a cool glass of rosé. In June l'Art du Vin’s sommelier, Richard Bouglet, invites you to discover the wonderous reds, whites, and famous rosés of La Provence. The night will be sure to bring a taste of the Riviera to Edinburgh. The event will consist of tasting different wines from the region and will be accompanied by some scrumptious nibbles prepared by our chef Yohann. Thu 14 June | 6.00 - 8.00pm

To mark 50 years since the événements de mai, Gavin Bowd, of the University of St Andrews, delivers a talk on British perspectives on May 68. What effect did the spectacular événements de mai 68 have across the Channel? Did they inspire solidarity or just confirm stereotypes about their turbulent neighbours? What legacy of May 68, if any, was there in Britain? This talk examines such questions, drawing on the British press, dispatches from the UK embassy in Paris, and documents from the archives of the British and French Communist Parties. Gavin Bowd is Reader in French at the University of St Andrews. His publications include: The Last Communard. Adrien Lejeune, the Unexpected LIfe of a Revolutionary (2016), Fascist Scotland. The Institut français d'Ecosse is happy to host an event organised by Stills Centre for Photography featuring renowned contemporary artist, Daniel Buren. The artist will visit Edinburgh to present a lecture on photography - outlining his thoughts on the medium and the vital role that photography plays as a tool for documenting his work. Daniel Buren is widely considered to be one of the most important figures in contemporary art. At the end of the1960s, he abandoned traditional painting and developed a radical form of conceptual art, adopting 8.7cm wide vertical stripes (1965) and using them as a ‘visual tool’ to prompt a reading of the work’s surroundings rather than just the work itself. Made with paint, fabric, paper and tape, among other materials, the stripes are part of interventions made in galleries, museums, and public sites. For the past fifty years Buren has mainly made works in situ. His pieces respond to the specifications of the particular location in which they stand. Buren’s works have become more sculptural and architectural, although the characteristic stripes are still a key element.
