For the 4th consecutive year, the Institut français d'Ecosse and the Consulate General of France in Edinburgh are participating in Doors Open Days, which invites people to discover Edinburgh’s architectural and cultural heritage for free. Across the weekend of September 29th and 30th. We will be opening to the public the doors of our new building on West Parliament Square and the Scottish Free French House, Official Residence of the Consul General of France in Scotland. As part of the Scottish Year of Young People, we will be inviting Young French and international musicians to perform live music. Furthermore, we encourage all young people to come and get a taste of France and the French language with playful activities organised by the institute français’s language centre and library. About the Institut français d'Ecosse There have been public buildings on this site for centuries. The present one was inaugurated in 1904 for Midlothian County. Since September 2017, it houses the Institut français d'Ecosse and Consulate General of France in Scotland, serving as a centre for cultural exchanges in the very heart of the Old Town and civic centre of Edinburgh. All are welcome to discover the architecture, our cultural offerings, and some unique treasures such as the 20,000 book library reserve which will be exceptionally shown as part of “behind the scenes” guided tours. Institut français d'Ecosse Dates & Times Access Details About the Scottish Free French House A typical New Town mansion, still occupied and used in the original spirit of the Georgian Terraces, the “Scottish Free French House” was donated by a generous Franco-Belgian businessman and inaugurated on 23 June 1942 by General Charles de Gaulle. It served as a resting place for officers of the Free French Naval Forces stationed in Scotland during WWII before becoming the residence of the Consul General of France in Scotland after the war. Other French connections on Regent Terrace include the houses where the exiled duke and duchess of Angoulême (respectively son and heir of the deposed king Charles X and daughter of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette) and the duchess of Berry (mother to the last Bourbon pretender to the throne of France) sojourned after the 1830 revolution in France. Scottish Free French House Dates & Times Access Details Doors Open Day is your chance to explore some of Edinburgh’s architecturally and culturally significant buildings—all for free. From heritage landmarks to the city’s newest architecture, Doors Open Day offers free access to properties that are either not usually open to the public or would normally charge an entry fee.
