During the week of Francophonie (17-25 march), the French Institute is proud to collaborate with the University of Edinburgh and Wallonie - Bruxelles International to bring a fascinating look at the French language in Belgium. Dr Isabelle Moreels of the University of Extremadura gives a presentation on linguistic variations of French in Belgium. Going beyond accents and vocabulary, Moreels demonstrates how these variations reveal a unique and métissée linguistic identity. WED 21 March | 6.30PM Venue: The library @ West Parliament Square, Edinburgh EH1 1RF Advanced booking recommended at 0131 285 60 30 or info ifecosse.org.uk from Institut Français Écosse http://www.ifecosse.org.uk/French-in-Belgium-Semaine-de-la.html via IFTTT via https://onlinevideoproduction.tumblr.com/post/171502521847
March’s Ciné-récré film will be Le chat du rabbin (2010, dir. Joann Sfar & Antoine Delesvaux). It is Algiers of the 1920s. Rabbi Sfar lives with his daughter Zlabya, a noisy parrot, and a playful, chatty cat who can’t help but lie. Its master would like to put some distance between the short-haired creature and his daughter, but the cat, crazy for Zlabya, is ready to do anything to stay close to her… even throw his own bar mitsvah! His path will cross that of an idealist Russian painter on a quest for an imaginary Jerusalem that Jews of every diaspora, skin colour, and ethnic background can call home. Ciné-récré is our cinema strand for families to enjoy films in a relaxed children-friendly setting. Once a month, the Institut français d'Ecosse welcomes members and their children to attend this special screening in our médiathèque. La Passion d'Augustine “Simone Beaulieu, a talented pianist better known as Mother Augustine, runs a convent school for girls, in 1960s rural Quebec. She has turned the school into a musical treasure where students have won every prestigious music competition in the region. When her talented but rebellious niece joins the convent and the government threatens to shut down the school in favour of public education, she and her fellow nuns will face a life-changing dilemma.” The screening will be followed by a reception, attended by lead actress Lysandre Ménard.
